Our
weekly Learn to Golf Party at Kennedy Golf course attracts 16 to 24
people every Monday afternoon. Ladies like it because they are
learning a new recreational activity. The men are happy to help them
learn and make the evening fun!
This is not for serious golfers.
Our "really-beginner" golf mixers start on the west patio of the
Kennedy Golf Course Clubhouse. We meet at 5:30 and start teeing off
at 6:00 and continue until 6:30 to accommodate those arriving after
work.
We
play on the short Par-3 Course at Kennedy Golf Course at East
Hampden and South Havana. This season, more advanced golfers can
team up and play the adjacent West Nine Course.
Later
we go to the nearby Fresh Fish Company (next to The Proof Nightclub
on East Hampden) for their late (8:30--10:00) happy hour with
reduced priced drinks and seafood appetizers. Shrimp cocktails,
coconut shrimp, calamari, gumbo, clam chowder and prime rib
sandwiches are priced from $3 to $4.50.)
Age Group--50+
For Beginners--Men and women team up to play on
the Par-3 course.
Meet and Learn--This is not serious competitive
league play. The purpose is for adult singles to meet and enjoy a
fun sport. It is a singles mixer at sunset on a lawn you don't have
to mow.
Scramble Format--In this team event everyone hits
their first drive. Then ball landing in the best location is
selected. Other players move their ball to that location and hit
their next shot from there. Beginner golfers become "putt leaders"
showing others the line of the first putt. Occasionally they make
one.
Volunteer Instructors--Experienced golfers are
teamed with beginners to give tips on techniques and help them learn
on-course skills. Some women have already taken lessons but never
felt comfortable playing on a full-length course.
Cost--$15 per person includes green fee, tee time,
instruction and organization.
Need Clubs?--Loaner sets of 4-5 clubs are available
free.
Fast Play--The Par-3 can be played in under two
hours. Traditional golf on a nine hole course takes more than 2 1/2
hours.
Changing Clothes--The lower level restrooms at
Kennedy have changing rooms.
No Commitment--You do not have to play each week or
rush from work. Tee times will start at 5:30 and go until 6:30 p.m.
Everyone should be finished by 8:00.
Bad Weather--We may not play but will still get
together for meet, mingle and share indoor lessons.
No Event Conflicts--We play on Monday nights to
avoid other singles events and social activities.
Friendly Competition--Team
scores are compared over drinks at the end of play for bragging
rights and trivial golf prizes are awarded.
