Rockies versus Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Game (Father's
Day and Fred's Birthday Celebration).
No meeting at Clements Community Center this evening. Friends and family are welcome to join us for this fun afternoon. Call Cathy at (303) 973-1134 for tickets. Jun 27 - Western Folk Music by Roz Brown Roz returns to entertain us with his western folk songs and amusing stories. He is noted for his unusual autoharp instrument that he uses to accompany his singing. Roz started entertaining in 1975 on a part-time basis after being stirred by "something in his soul" about the folk music of the 1960's. Then in 1990 he went full-time making his living in the music business. Way back in 1980 he started performing upstairs at the Buckhorn Exchange Restaurant (Denver's oldest restaurant at 10th and Osage) and now he entertains there weekly. During the weekdays you'll find him singing and playing at senior centers, retirement homes, and nursing homes. If that isn't enough, he still finds time to entertain at civic groups and clubs around Colorado. With over 400 songs in his repertory, he's sure to provide us with an entertaining evening of western folk music. July
Jul 4 - 4
pm - Independence Day Picnic
No meeting at Clements Community Center this evening. Come celebrate the holiday at a picnic near Caroline's condominium in Arvada. Be sure to wear your red, white, and blue for the occasion. The club will furnish the entree (fried chicken), as well as the paper products, and iced tea. All we ask is that you bring a potluck side item or dessert and your own drink if you're not into iced tea. A lawn chair would be a good idea too. Call Caroline at (303) 425-7153 for directions to the picnic site (near 83rd and Everett Way). Jul 11 - Jul 18 - Jul 25 - "Wisdom Gone Wild" Kitchen Band Using pots, pans, spoons, and other kitchen items, you'd be surprised at the unique sound a kitchen band can produce. Specific details on this "non-philharmonic" band to follow. August
Aug 1 - "Charge! The Life
Lessons of Theodore Roosevelt" by Don Moon
Don will come in costume as Teddy, one of the most dynamic Presidents in our history. Don's portrayal takes on the personal, political, and civic life of this fascinating man. Teddy was especially interested in the natural world and man's involvement in it. From his youth in Oyster Bay and the Adirondacks and his time in the wilderness (after his wife and mother died), he developed a love of his country and its wonders. He was schooled by his parents to be a leader and became a consummate politician. Don originally developed his role as T.R. as part of an advertising plan for one of Colorado's historic hotels. In real life Don is a Colorado native raised in Pueblo and his roots go back to the last century when his grandparents came to Colorado in a covered wagon and homesteaded 640 acres along the lower Arkansas River. He has a B.A. in history from CU and settled in Colorado Springs after 19 months in Vietnam. This should be a very interesting and educational program. Aug 8 - "Coal, Smoke, and Steam" Railroads by Marty Youngmann Marty gave us an interesting slide show on the United Kingdom in January and he returns to give us a slide show on America's railroad power of the past. His presentation will feature the "Big Boy", the world's largest steam locomotive, as well as narrow gauge equipment like the "Galloping Goose" and others. Marty has been a photographer for over sixty years, starting out as a student and then an instructor in the Army Air Corps Photography School. He went on to study basic photography and technique at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and College of DuPage in Illinois. Marty converts his photos into PowerPoint for his presentations and loves to show his passion for travel, nature, and wildflowers. Since 1986 he has taught basic photography in the North Jeffco Parks and Recreation District and enjoys teaching students of all ages. Aug 15 - Aug 22 - Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia by Gail Hillgrim Come learn about these insidious diseases that are incurable, degenerative, and terminal. Unfortunately they affect more and more people, especially those over age 65. Details about the speaker to follow. Aug 29 - September
Sep 5 - 4
pm - Labor Day Weekend Picnic
No meeting at Clements Community Center this evening. Come celebrate the holiday at a BBQ picnic at the home of Pat S in Lakewood. The club will furnish the entree, as well as the paper products, and iced tea. All we ask is that you bring a potluck side item or dessert and your own drink if you're not into iced tea. A lawn chair would be a good idea too. Call Pat S at (303) 988-6317 for directions to her place. Sep 12 - Celtic, American, and Old Time Country Music by Loretta Thompson Loretta is known for her dynamic fiddling and radiant voice. She's passionate about the music of her Scottish-Irish and American heritage, as well as traditional music and dance. Besides fiddling and singing, she also plays guitar, whistles, and entertains her audiences with unforgettable melodies and toe-tapping jigs and reels. She's been featured for many years at local, state, and national Scottish and Irish gatherings, Celtic Festivals, and in concerts with other Celtic entertainers. Loretta has experience as a public school orchestra director, music teacher, and is a member of the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra. She majored in music education and conducting at Metro State College and has been an instructor at the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp since its inception in 1999. Currently she composes music, teaches privately, and conducts two music groups - Summit Middle School Celtic music group and the Colorado Chinese Language School Orchestra. Sep 19 - "Thinking Outside the Planet" by Jeff Peckman Jeff will ask us "Are you ready to 'meet and greet' people from other planets?" He'll explain how "thinking outside the planet" can improve the economy and healthcare, as well as create clean energy. Jeff has been interviewed about UFOs and extraterrestrial visitors by Larry King, Geraldo, and even David Letterman. He is well known as a UFO disclosure activist, columnist for Examiner.com, and even as a political candidate for the Natural Law Party. His ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission has been certified by the Denver Elections Division and is currently scheduled for the August 2010 ballot. Jeff's presentation promises to be fun, fascinating, perhaps comforting, and certainly "out of this world". Sep 26 - October
Oct 3 -
Oct 10 - Oct 17 - Oct 24 - Oct 31 - Halloween Costume Party (No Speaker) Costumes are optional, but encouraged. We'll start out with a potluck dinner of Halloween food items, the scarier the better, so be thinking of how you can modify some food items for the holiday. There will prizes for the best costumes in various categories and also for the potluck items. Of course there will be decorations and music. Then we'll play some Bingo for spooky prizes. November
Nov 7 - Club Fundraiser Auction
(No Speaker)
Please join us for one of the favorite events of the year and help the club continue to remain financially sound. It costs a lot for the rental of the hall, food, and speakers each week, so we need additional funds to continue to operate without raisng the dues or door fees. Some of the funds also help supplement the annual dinner/dance. Be sure to bring your donated items (baked goods, services, dining, plays, useful items, etc) to the club either before (preferably) this evening. Also be sure to bring plenty of cash or checks for the purchases you make. Perhaps you'll even pick up some gift items for the holidays. Nov 14 - Nov 21 - Thanksgiving Dinner (No Speaker) This is always one of the best feasts of the year. We'll have turkey with all the trimmings, as well as delicious side dishes and desserts. Each course is presented in progressive dinner style, rotating tables to share the delicious morsels and conversation with many members and guests. We're sure you'll leave the evening happily stuffed. Nov 28 - December
Dec 5 -
Dec 12, 6 pm to 10 pm - Holiday Dinner/Dance at an undetermined location. However, reservations are required by Mon, Dec 6th. No meeting at Clements Community Center this evening. Come enjoy a great evening of delicious food, cash bar, conversation, and dancing to a wide variety of music. Dressy or cocktail attire is suggested, as this is a very special social event. The cost has yet to be determined for both members and guests. However, members may or may not receive a small rebate at the event. Please let us know you'll be joining us by Mon, Dec 6th, so we can let the caterer know. Dec 19 - White Elephant Gift Exchange (No Speaker) This is traditionally the most popular meeting of the year. Be sure to bring a wrapped gift - something you don't really need, but still worthwhile to someone else. Some gifts are funny, others are practical, and still others have no classification whatsoever. Several well-known gifts seem to show up every year and add to the fun. You'll get a number at the door and gifts are chosen in that sequence. If you don't care for the gift you open, you are allowed to steal from others that are already opened. Each gift is allowed to be stolen only a certain number of times, but this results in lots of laughs and "bargaining". Dec 26 -
